Taking longer to conceive is more common than most people think, and most causes can be treated. The key step is starting the assessment at the right time, for both partners together.
When is a pregnancy considered delayed?
If there's no pregnancy after a year of regular intercourse without contraception, it's time for tests. If you're 35 or older, we start after 6 months.
Who should be checked early?
- If your periods are irregular or don't come.
- If you've had pelvic surgery or repeated infections.
- If you've previously been diagnosed with endometriosis.
- If your husband has a known fertility problem.
The basic tests
- Hormone tests on specific days of the cycle.
- Ovulation tracking by ultrasound.
- A dye X-ray of the uterus and tubes.
- An ovarian reserve test.
- A semen analysis for the husband.
