In ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection), each egg is fertilised in the lab with a single sperm. Knowing the stages eases the worry and keeps you ready for every step.

The stages

  1. Assessment and preparation: tests for both partners and choosing the right protocol.
  2. Ovarian stimulation: injections for about two weeks, monitored by ultrasound and blood tests.
  3. The trigger shot: given at a precise time before egg collection.
  4. Egg collection: a short procedure under light anaesthesia.
  5. Fertilisation in the lab: a single sperm injected into each mature egg.
  6. Watching the embryos develop in the lab for several days.
  7. Embryo transfer: placing the embryo in the uterus, usually without anaesthesia.
  8. A pregnancy test about two weeks after the transfer.

Success rates

Success depends on age, ovarian reserve, the cause of the delay and embryo quality. The doctor explains your chances clearly before you begin.
